I have trouble swallowing my Birth control pill?
Quickly Book mark.

I take a birth control pill and they are REALLY tiny.

I don't know why but everytime I take it I feel like it gets stuck in my throat..

My dad tells me my body is used to chewing food and swallowing it, and with a pill, even as small as it is, it will rub against my throat and I just have a 'rubbed' feeling. That and I just keep thinking about it constantly.

Because for birth control pills I know you have to take it at the same time each day, but if it's in my throat.. how long would it take to dissolve? is it still effective?

I've tried everything with water to swallow the pill to where it won't rub my throat. Someone said something about swallowing it with pudding...

Could I crush it? Chew it? (I heard it has a HORRIBLE taste, but..)

I just hope I'm not messing up my cycle.

I don't even know if it's really stuck there in my throat,

I hope it went down... who's to know?

Answer:

You should be fine... even if it's in your throat for a few minutes it will disolve and be absorded. And while you should take it at the same time every day, there is always a little bit of give and take. For instance, one day you may have a full stomach and one day you may have an empty stomach and that would impact the absorbtion rate as well.

But, if you're really having so much difficulty swallowing pills, there are other effective methods you can try. For instance, the Nuva ring is a hormonal contraceptive that's a ring that you insert into your vagina and leave in. It works just like the pill (it's got the same hormones) but you don't have to swallow it! And, there is also the Evra patch, which is like a bandaid containing hormones. You stick one on every week. It also works like the pill. And, there's also a contraceptive shot called Depo-provera which is a shot you get every 6 weeks. That uses a different hormone, but it's highly effective as well.

Talk to your doctor or a local family planning clinic about your options. Your birth control shouldn't make you miserable.
