I had never had cold sores my entire life. Very rarely a canker sore, but no cold sores. About 3 weeks ago I was having really severely chapped lips so I borrowed my dad's chap stick. Shortly after I got a nasty cold sore on my lower lip. It went away after about 5 day but now suddenly I have another one on my upper lip. I'm so pissed off, did I get this from my dad's nasty mouth you think? I haven't kissed anyone in a long time so that's not the cause.

However I read that pretty much everyone has the herpes HSV-1 that causes it, so maybe I already had it and I'm breaking out for a different reason? (like hormonal changes?) Not sure how true this is though.

Lastly, there is a possibility that I will be kissing a girl sometime in the near future, what should I do? because I don't want to give someone this pain.

Answer:

Cancer sores are different than cold sores. They have nothing to do with each other.

It could have been passed from your father, or it could have been passed by someone else long ago. If your lips were chapped, that alone could be a reason for a flair up.

Most people do not think to share the fact they have had a cold sore with a kissing partner. This is why 1/10 people have this virus. Just remember that you can pass it on to a partner through oral sex. It is always best to be open about about the risk
