Many times we know that we have some sort of infection that requires an antibiotic. However, many of those times the doctor does not want to give an antibiotic--and we've wound up in the emergency room with ruptured eardrums, etc., because we did not get the antibiotic. First of all, you need to determine if what you have is viral or bacterial. Many times those doctors know what they're talking about...that's how they got those letters after their names. A basic rule of thumb is: if you check out your phlegm (pronounced flem) and it's greenish, then you have a viral infection. No amount of antibiotic will help you unless you get a secondary infection and it's bacterial. Your doctor won't prescribe antibiotics if you don't have a bacterial infection for one simple reason: if you use it when you don't need it, your body will build up a tolerance to it and then will not respond to it when you need it to.
