I have been diagnosed with chronic constipation motility disorder and 2 doctors have now advised me to consider having a sub-total colectomy. Not sure if this is the answer and do not know where to turn. Can anyone help me? Answer:i'm a surgical intern. funny thing, i scrubbed in on one today. a subtotal colectomy is a general term for removing part of a diseased colon. this is your third consulation. your colon is a vital organ, a diseased colon is like living with half a lung. it's very important to have the disease removed. find a surgeon who will do this laparoscopically. it cuts recovery in half. you will need to stay in the hospital for a minimum of four days.. enough time for the doctor to make sure that your colon is working properly. yes, the operation will have a resection which is attaching the rectum to the other end of the colon. i hope you seriously consider an operation. best of luck~ Surgical Procedures: Subtotal Colectomy Subtotal Colectomy surgery involves the removal of a part of the colon (this procedure is more extensive and involves the removal of more of the colon than "resection" surgery). During Subtotal Colectomy surgery, an incision is made in the abdomen and the diseased portion of the colon is identified and removed. Once a diseased segment of the colon is removed, the two ends are reconnected, and this connection is called an "anastomosis". |
