Hello, I am 28 weeks pregnant and suspect I am developing gestational diabetes. I have seen my doctor who dismissed me so I decided to take matter into my own hands.

I bought a glucose meter and did a 50g 1 hour glucose test this afternoon. I had been eating and drinking normally before performing the test.

The result I obtained on the glucose meter was 11.9 which is 214.

Is this result ok? I am worried cos I dont feel well after eating my dinner and have a high bmi.

Please help out someone.

Answer:

Taking matters into your own hands especially while pregnant was not a great idea. You would need 2 results to be able to assess your glucose tolerance, a fasted and a 2 hour post prandial. Find a sympathetic doctor and get it done properly. Any decent chap would do it, since it is a harmless test, if only to reassure you. Try the test again but don't eat for 6 hours before (first thing in the morning) and if your BM is still high see your Doc again. Gestational diabetes has very serious implications for the pregnancy as you have a higher risk of a very large baby.

It is however very common so see your midwife if you are still worried. A glucose tolerance test has to be done from fasting, so the result you got was useless. Test first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything. This should be around 6.0 mmol/l (normal range 4 - 7 mmol/l). Do this every morning for a week. If its consistently higher than 7, go back to your doctor and tell him you need to be tested properly. Portion conrtol will help with bmi. Stop eating 3 hours before bed. You feel sick after you eat because youre pregnant. Your dr has more knowledge in this than you or me. I think you have to drink the sugar syrup for this test. If you dont like your drs oppinion maybe you should get a new one. A glucose test is usually performed after you have fasted over night and had nothing to eat or drink after midnight and until after the testing is done. Usually urine, blood and glucose testing is done all at once.
