every time i eat basically anything, my lips swell up and it looks like i've just had a make-out session. i've never really minded but i usually get the "your lips are swollen" comment or something of the like and after a while that gets tedious. does anyone know if this is a condition? i've never had real allergic reactions except for being in the same room as a cat.

it's just annoying and it'd be great if i actually knew why this happens, any answers are appreciated.

Answer:

i have severe food allergies, as does my son. ill tell you the foods that we have had that reaction with. melons of any kind, tree nuts, coconut, tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, bananas, chili powder, avocados. it starts out that my lip itches, so i kinda bite it to make the itch stop, then it starts to swell. i dont know if my food allergies list will help, but maybe theres something to these foods that you have a similar reaction. maybe itll help you narrow it down. youll have to go to the allergist and have a skin scratch test done. log all the things youve eaten that you get that reaction (the whole meal), and take the list to your allergist for the skin test. it doesnt hurt, but its kinda irritating. they scratch the allergen into your skin and wait to see if a welt forms. its important to avoid the allergens, as they will impact your overall health. Swelling is a sign of an allergy. You just may not know what food you are eating that you allergic to and you may eat that food often which causes your lips to swell at each meal. Tell your family doctor and have him refer you for allergy testing. Good luck. I get it when there is alot of salt in anything... Lip swelling is definitely not good. Basically you are going to have to narrow it down to find out what it is. Eat something that you have not had lip swelling with, then slowly one a day eat something different. If it causes swelling put it on a list. after you have two or three things you can compare to see if anything is in common. <alot of stuff has nut extract or certain oils> do you lick or suck on your lips when you eat? You might do this and not realize it. Have braces? If it gets worse than just your lips go to the doctor! You can also try benadryl but it will make you sleepy. I know, this grosses some out, but you can use preparation H <new tube of course> on your lips it will take the puffiness out. Good Luck! Your lip may be swelling due to angioedema. It can be because of an allergy or it can be hereditary. I would go to a doctor and bring a picture if you have one. it most likely an undiagnosed food allergy. I had the same problem, then found out I am allergic to wheat, soy, eggs, dairy, peanuts, tomato, and avacado. I quite eating those foods, and it cleared up. Now it only happens if I accidentally ingest some. You might try keeping a food diary to see what makes it worse-it will help you discover what you are allergic to
