Lantus users: do you take once or twice a day? (I've heard that it's not truly peakless and only lasts about 23 hours).

Detemir users: what have you noticed different from other long-acting insulins you've taken (especially Lantus, but also NPH)?

Answer:

I've been taking Lantus for about five years now, once a day, with Humalog as coverage insulin at meals. I have noticed that WHEN I take my Lantus makes a huge difference in levels. When I was first prescribed it, I was taking it at nights, but seemed to drop in morning, but rise in evenings. Switching to mornings helped for awhile, but then dropped in evenings, and rose in morninjgs. Now, i take it at 5:00 in the evening, and it provides the best coverage overall. In short, WHEN is just as important as how much. my boyfriend is type 1 and takes lantus once a day when he wakes up. my manager is type 2 and takes lantus once a day at night before she sleeps.

boyfriend loves it, my manager said that shes not sure yet because its new for her. I am a type 1 and I have taken lantus 2 x a day for 3 years. I use novolog as my rapid. I take more lantus in the am then i take in the pm. So far so good no complaints so far. Once a day ! I took Lantus every night at 11pm (bedtime) and I had no problems with it what so ever. I actually just switched to Levemir 2 weeks ago; my doctor said that levemir does not have as much of a weight gain side effect as lantus, and that levemir helps with resistance problems.

I don't know much about determir, but with the levemir I might have to switch to 2 shots a day.
