With a child it is vital you both learn quickly, and if you train him/her at an early age she will be able to manage for the rest of life.

Good Luck I can't believe your child's doctor did not set you up for an appointment with a dietitian or another resource for your child's treatment.Get rid of that doctor.

You need to learn how to count carbs and how much insulin to give.

Please get to a good pediatric endocrinologist for the best treatment .

She needs a balanced diet and adequate calories for growth, as well as a system to attempt to keep her blood sugars in a safe range as much as possible.

You need to take your child to a PEDIATRIC Endocrinologist (diabetes doctor for kids), and a dietitian familiar with Type 1 diabetes as well.

Most children with Type 1 diabetes using the new insulins can eat a "normal" diet. The important idea is that you match their insulin to what they eat, just like their pancreas used to do before they got Type 1 diabetes.
