I have been insulin dependant for 14 years & started with high blood pressure last summer. The dr. put me on hydrochlorothiazide & it has been raising my blood sugars. What other high blood pressure pills do any of you take with diabetes ? Answer:I have had diabetes for about 11 years and am 37 years old. Although I have not been diagnosed for very long with high blood pressure, it has been about 4 months. I am on atacand (16MG / day) and Coreg 2 times daily (12.5mg). While my blood sugars have not risen due to this medicine, the medicine is not helping my blood pressure enough. I currently run about 140 / 100 which is still too high. So to answer this, Atacand might not raise your blood sugar, but it also might not help your blood pressure. I am working with my doctor now to decide what is the best for me before I stroke out!! Good luck, and visit my blog on diabetes at http://www.diabetes-today.net There are many, many different blood pressure medications on the market, but the one you indicate seems to fall into the category of diuretics ( http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-5310-hyd... ). These don't typically elevate blood sugar levels, but, if you'er having a problem, talk to your doctor. There may be another medication in this family that your doctor could try. I take furosemide (lasix), which is often prescribed for blood pressure (in my case, it's for edema), that does not affect my blood sugar levels, and is also a diuretic like hydrochlorothiazide. There are alos otehr families of blood pressure medications, like ACE-inhibitors, and Beta blockers, that may also be effective in your case, but your doctor would know which family of medications would be best for your condition at this time. Hope this helps! Best of luck! |
