If someone had a 6.5 on the A1C diabetes test and then had a 6.7 7 months later would it be safe to not take diabetes medicine and try to diet and exercise to bring the numbers down? Doctors only please. Answer:You should see your doctor because they are more knowledgeable about this. Diabetes is not a simple disease they are asymptomatic and according to researches untreated diabetes for 10 to 15 years might lead to major complications such as heart disease, diminished vision, numbness, kidney failure and many others. That really depends on how many medications you are on and how much you weigh. It probably is not be a good idea since it is the medications that are keeping your A1C down. If you were to stop the medications, that number would more then likely go up. The best thing to do would be to make a plan with your endocrinologist or who ever is managing your diabetes. Let them know that you want to get off of your medications and that you desire to try the diet and exercises routine. Even before you talk to them, you should try to increase your exercises and loose some weight. Show your doctor that this is important to you. It is not impossible to get off of your medication, but it could be a lot of hard work. Pharmacist |
