Has anyone went to get tested before? What was the procedure? Is it best to schedule the appt for the morning or afternoon? Answer:The typical tests for diabetes are: Overall Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT, where you drink a bottle of sweet stuff, and they take blood samples at intervals to measure how your body is metabolizing the glucose), a glycosulated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c, a blood test which shows your average blood glucose level over a three month period), and a serum glucose test ( a blood test, that shows your glucose level at the time of testing). usually, with any of tehse, fasting is required, as eating can throw off the results. It's best t go in the morning, if only to get it over with so you can go get breakfast afterwards. Hope this helps! I would think that the morning would be the best time. Your blood sugar level should be more stable after a good night's rest. After you eat, your blood sugar level rises. When I was checked for Diabetes, they had me not eat for 12 hours, then at Doctor Apt. Time, he took my blood sugar count, then he sent me to McDonalds to get a Hamburger, Fries, Coke, and an Ice Cream, and I ate it, then he took my blood sugar count again to see what it was, and if it went way too higher then normal, then I had diabetes. Which I did. Depends on the test. One test requires fasting so an early appointment is required. The other doesn't and can be done anytime. You need to ask the pathology service when you make your appointment. They will advise you from what test the doctor has ordered. First they'll prick your finger and have you in pee in a cup (to test for keytones/protein). They'll ask you questions about your lifestyle, for ex: do you get tired easily? Do you take a long time to heal after you get cut? Do you have to go to the bathroom a lot? Are you thirsty frequently? It depends on your health practitioner. Frequently in my clinic we order a HGB H1C which is a blood test which will look at your blood sugars over the past three months. This gives the doctor an idea how your blood sugars have been running over a extended period of time. If your blood sugars are running high you possibly may have diabetes. |
