Hi, Is it true that there is a specialization field of dentistry that focuses on creating 'faces' - that is, facial prosthetics? What is the role of dentists in this, do they make those models themselves? I namely found a website (University of Gothenburg) where they do research on odontology and they had an interesting picture on the website ( http://www.gu.se/forskning/ ) so I started to wonder if that's what dentists do, too. Thanks! Answer:I have just been accepted to dental school and am VERY interested in prosthodontics. With facial "creating" it is not something your GP dentist would do. It requires a 3-4 year prosthodontics residency after you complete your DDS degree. For example, I work in research at a cancer hospital. I went down to visit with a prosthodontist to see what he did. He was making ears, noses, eyes etc for cancer patients who had lost their own. Dentists...they aren't just for teeth anymore. Like I said though, it's a specialty field. YOU NEED TO DO DENTISTRY THEN SPECIALISE IN THE FIELD OF PROSTHODONTICS WHRE THEY TEACH YOU FACIAL PROSTHETICS. REMEMBER YOU CAN MAINLY WORK AT A HOSPITAL OR A UNIVERSITY WHEN YOU FINISH. PRIVATE PRACTICE IN THIS FIELD IS NOT VERY OPEN..UNLESS YOU TEAM UP WITH A PLASTIC SURGEON |
